Why Do Wrinkles Appear?
Wrinkles are an inherent part of the aging process. Two primary factors contribute to the development of wrinkles. First, our skin undergoes a natural reduction in firmness and elasticity over time. Second, the aging process leads to diminished skin moisture production.
Reason 1: Wrinkles Due to Diminished Firmness and Elasticity
The structural proteins responsible for our skin's integrity are known as collagens. Situated in the deeper layers of the skin (dermis), these proteins create a framework that supports our skin.
As the aging process unfolds, this framework weakens due to a decrease in collagen production.
Furthermore, collagen production is disrupted by external factors such as UV light, air pollution, and stress. These factors generate free radicals, aggressive molecules that assail our body, inducing oxidative stress.
Free radicals prompt the production of flawed collagen, rendering our skin structure more fragile. The visible outcome is reduced firmness, ultimately resulting in the emergence of wrinkles.
What can you do?
A good anti-aging skincare regimen includes antioxidants, compounds capable of neutralizing free radicals. Vitamin C, in particular, has proven highly effective in supporting the body's production of healthy collagen.
However, several other potent antioxidants exist to protect our skin, and we'll delve into them in more detail later.

Reason 2: Wrinkles Due to Reduced Skin Moisture
Wrinkles can also emerge from dry skin, often leading to fine lines around the eyes.
These wrinkles result from the reduced sebum production in aging skin, causing a loss of skin elasticity and facilitating wrinkle formation.
What can you do?
The skin's natural moisture retention system is known as the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). Moisturizers in creams can support the NMF, contributing to enhanced skin elasticity.
While many are familiar with hyaluronic acid's ability to hydrate both internal and external skin layers, there are additional tips to counteract dry skin, which we'll explore in more detail later.

Different Types of Wrinkles
Dermatologists typically distinguish between two main types of wrinkles: dynamic (mimic) wrinkles and static wrinkles.
Dynamic wrinkles, also known as mimic wrinkles, become visible only during facial expressions, such as frowning or laughing.
On the other hand, static wrinkles are continuously visible, irrespective of facial expressions. They can result from factors like gravity, sleeping positions, or the consequences of dynamic wrinkles.
Wrinkles often form in areas with frequent facial movements, transitioning from dynamic to static wrinkles over time.
An example of dynamic and static wrinkles
Forehead wrinkles are considered dynamic wrinkles, but over time, a furrow line may develop, turning it into a static wrinkle.

What really helps against wrinkles?
Your skin needs two things to combat wrinkles: protection against free radicals and moisture.
But let's be honest with you. It is always challenging to reduce existing wrinkles. While wrinkles are not irreversible, creams tend to work more preventively.
The following tips can help protect your skin and potentially visibly improve existing wrinkles.
By the way
, all wrinkles have the same cause. Therefore, these tips are effective regardless of the type of wrinkles. Good cosmetics work against wrinkles around the eyes just as effectively as they do against wrinkles around the mouth.

The causes of wrinkles are always the same. That's why a good anti-wrinkle cream helps with various types of wrinkles.
Antioxidants Against Wrinkles
One of the main causes of premature skin aging is oxidative stress in our skin, triggered by free radicals. Free radicals also damage our collagen framework—the foundation for wrinkle-free skin.
The good news is there are many substances that can neutralize free radicals. These agents are called antioxidants.
They should therefore be a vital part of any anti-aging skincare routine. Here, we will introduce you to some of the most important ones.
Pharmacist's Tip:
Antioxidants work synergistically. It is recommended to use several of them.
Vitamin C Against Wrinkles
Vitamin C is probably the most well-known antioxidant. Its positive effects on our skin have been proven in numerous studies. Vitamin C is involved in collagen formation, promoting smoother skin with fewer wrinkles.
Learn all about the different types of vitamin C and the perfect dosage in this article.
By the way, our Vitamin C Booster contains 15% pure vitamin C. This is the most effective form to prevent wrinkles.
Retinol Against Wrinkles
Derivatives of vitamin A, such as retinol or the prescription medication tretinoin (vitamin A acid) in topical form, have the ability to smooth wrinkles and improve skin texture.
However, these forms of vitamin A can be irritating and must be combined with sun protection. A well-tolerated alternative is retinyl palmitate.
Learn more about the application of retinol and its various forms in this article.
Our Recommendation: Beyer & Söhne Retinol Booster
Our Retinol Booster with high-dose retinol, retinal, and many other active ingredients. A potent product developed to prevent wrinkles.
Vitamin E Against Wrinkles
Vitamin E is not just a potent antioxidant; it also regenerates the protective barrier and shields against UV radiation. The most effective form is called tocotrienol. We use it in our Dayshade products with high UVA protection.
Learn more about vitamin E and the effects of tocotrienol in this article.
Q10 Against Wrinkles
Another well-known antioxidant is coenzyme Q10. It has a dual action, supporting our cells in energy production and acting as an antioxidant. Its effectiveness against wrinkles has been demonstrated in studies.
Find out more about the effects of Q10 in this article.
Natural Antioxidants
There are numerous antioxidants found in nature. The world's most effective antioxidant is astaxanthin from red algae. It can also be used in skincare, and we incorporate it into our Dayshade products with sun protection, such as our Dayshade Cream, a daily care product with SPF 50.
Another powerful natural antioxidant is resveratrol, known as the longevity molecule, acclaimed by researchers worldwide as an anti-aging ingredient.
Green tea is also effective against oxidative stress and skin aging. We use all these ingredients in our products.

Antioxidants protect the skin against wrinkles. In addition to proper skincare, a healthy diet also contributes to this effect.
Fewer Wrinkles Through Increased Moisture
Cosmetics can also reduce minor dryness wrinkles through moisturizers, focusing on two crucial aspects.
1.
Firstly, the skin needs to be supplied with moisturizers.
2.
Secondly, the skin barrier must be strengthened to retain more moisture.
Moisturizers Against Wrinkles
Effective moisturizers include, for example,
hyaluronic acid
,
glycerin
, and
pentylene glycol
. The overall formulation of the cream or serum always plays a role.
In a balanced combination, these ingredients support the skin's natural moisture retention system, known as the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). The better our NMF functions, the fewer wrinkles will form.
Does Hyaluronic Acid Really Work So Well Against Wrinkles?
Hyaluronic acid is not a miracle cure, but it is a noteworthy moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to bind large amounts of water.
However, not all hyaluronic acid is the same. The smaller the hyaluronic acid fragments, the better it can penetrate the skin. Therefore, the key term is low molecular weight hyaluronic acid. Studies show that this ingredient can indeed reduce wrinkles.
Learn more about the anti-wrinkle effects of hyaluronic acid in this article.
Fewer Wrinkles Through a Strong Skin Barrier
Various ingredients strengthen our skin barrier, including natural oils. There is a wide selection of these oils. For instance, we use neutral oil to nourish the skin (INCI:
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
). It serves as a compatible oil base for natural cosmetics, carrying active ingredients into the skin and is known not to cause impurities.
Many of our formulations also include squalane, a silky-light oil preventing moisture loss in the skin.
The Pro Tip: Ceramides and Phosphatidylcholine
Yet, the real game-changers are the pure membrane lipids. These special fats are like the unsung heroes of our skin's protective layer, packing a serious punch.
In all our concoctions, we swear by ceramides. These little wonders are the natural lipids that make up about 60% of the fats in our skin barrier.
Additionally, we recommend phosphatidylcholine, a component of every cell in our body. We use this special membrane lipid to make our Hautcreme+. As a result, your skin becomes stronger every time you use it.

A well-hydrated skin remains more resistant to wrinkles for a longer time. Hyaluronic acid or ceramides can be helpful.
Sun Protection Against Wrinkles
One of the primary causes of visible skin aging is cumulative UV exposure – the UV radiation our skin absorbs over the years. However, the damages from this exposure only become apparent with a time delay, meaning years or even decades later.
Hence, the motto is: Prevention is better than cure.
From a practical standpoint, spending your entire life in a light-proof room isn't feasible. That's why we advocate for a mindful approach to sun and UV radiation.
How to Protect Yourself From UV Radiation
During extended outdoor activities, shield your skin with clothing. Wearing long sleeves, a sun hat, and sunglasses are simple and effective methods. They don't require the hassle of applying creams and offer reliable protection.
Exposed skin areas, on the other hand, should be safeguarded with a sunscreen product.
Please note
: Sunscreen only has an anti-wrinkle effect when applied correctly. This involves applying a sufficient amount approximately 30 minutes before UV exposure. During prolonged outdoor stays, sunscreen should be reapplied regularly. This is the key to its reliable efficacy.

What Works for Eye Wrinkles?
Wrinkles, especially around the eyes, are common. These eye wrinkles are sometimes referred to as crow's feet, but we prefer to call them laugh lines.
The skin around the eyes is particularly thin, requiring more moisture and extra care. Therefore, ensure there's an ample supply of moisturizers and lipids around the eyes.
For the eye area, a slightly richer care product is recommended, such as our Skin Cream+ designed for dry skin.
Additionally, you can use our Skin Gel+ as a hyaluronic serum. It not only contains a high concentration of hyaluronic acid but also boasts added Vitamin C and other antioxidants.

The most beautiful wrinkles are laugh lines. The thin skin around the eyes tends to dry out quickly, and a rich skincare routine can be incredibly helpful.
Anti-Wrinkle Care for the Body
It's not just facial skin that benefits from good care; other areas of the skin are also prone to stress, like the hands and décolleté. Here, too, the skin layer is quite thin.
Unfortunately, the signs of aging tend to manifest earliest on these thin skin areas. Regular care in these zones can help reduce the formation of wrinkles.
The good news is you don't need an extensive skincare regimen that tries to sell you a separate cream for every skin area.
Different Wrinkles, Different Active Ingredients?
The causes of skin aging and wrinkle formation are largely the same across different skin areas.
That's why we expanded our skincare line with the Bodylotion+. It contains everything the skin needs to regenerate and prevent wrinkle formation.
Additionally, this anti-aging body care includes an extra dose of Vitamin C and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid.
Natural Cosmetics Against Wrinkles
Certainly, well-crafted natural cosmetics can have an impact on combating wrinkles. The most effective antioxidants are found in nature, and the best moisturizers are both natural and vegan.
Additionally, we firmly believe that natural oils and components native to the skin yield the best anti-aging results. Ceramides are one of the latest trends in anti-aging cosmetics, and the best part is—they're entirely natural.
Hyaluronic acid also naturally occurs in the body, and we use it in its pure and vegan form.
Anti-Wrinkle Care Without Silicones and Mineral Oil
There's another reason why we prefer natural cosmetic anti-wrinkle care. Conventional care often relies on artificial oils that seal off our skin: mineral oils and silicones. These oils are derived from petroleum and, in our opinion, pose dermatological drawbacks.
Silicone oil forms a layer on our skin, visually filling in wrinkles. However, silicones have no long-term effect; the impact is only cosmetic.
Mineral oil, too, doesn't provide sustained nourishment to the skin. It creates an occlusive layer, preventing water loss, but it doesn't contribute to building up the skin barrier.
Injections for Wrinkles
Whether one considers these types of wrinkle treatments is a personal decision. It's crucial to understand that these techniques involve partially invasive measures that can have side effects.
To address deeply entrenched wrinkles, injections like Botulinum toxin (for dynamic wrinkles) and fillers like hyaluronic acid (for volume loss and static wrinkles) are necessary.
Invasive measures offer a quick solution to wrinkles. However, caution is advised, as there are significantly greater risks compared to using a cream. Therefore, such procedures should only be performed by experienced specialists in dermatology or plastic surgery.
Especially so-called "injectables" (Botulinum toxin and fillers) are particularly attractive to doctors practicing in other fields (e.g., anesthesia, gynecology, internal medicine). Often, there's a lack of specialized training and in-depth knowledge.

Invasive measures against wrinkles should only be conducted by true professionals: dermatologists or surgeons.
Are There Home Remedies for Wrinkles?
To wrap up, we unequivocally distance ourselves from any "home remedies" for wrinkles. We have reservations about chemical peels, microneedling, and microdermabrasion.
These tips and tricks can be potentially dangerous, causing scars, discoloration, or even infections in the worst-case scenario. At best, these techniques may yield no noticeable results.
We are also not advocates of facial exercises, as the repetitive execution of certain facial expressions over time could contribute to the development of dynamic wrinkles.
Last but not least: Fewer wrinkles through a healthy lifestyle
The best home remedies for wrinkles involve adopting a healthy lifestyle and consuming fresh, unprocessed food, primarily sourced from plant-based origins. Equally crucial are high-quality skincare and a contented life.
One thing to remember: the most beautiful wrinkles are laugh lines.
